Selected work

Four evenings, described properly

Client names stay private, because most of this work is internal or personal. Everything else here is accurate: the venues, the constraints, the numbers and what came out of it.

Corporate year-end function with casino-themed entertainment tables
Year-end corporate function with several casino-themed entertainment tables in a heritage hall

National services company

Year-end function for 110 guests in a heritage hall

A high-ceilinged heritage hall with no rigging allowed and a bright, even house light that made everything look like a conference. We took the whole floor: four tables placed away from the bar queue, floor-standing fixtures and table lighting instead of truss, and the house lights down to a quarter.

Outcome. Speeches at eight with tables closed, reopened on cue, and the room stayed whole until close. The client rebooked for the following year before the strip-out finished.

Private milestone celebration with an entertainment table in a lodge living room

Private milestone, Hanmer Springs

Thirty guests, two tables, in a lodge living room

A sixtieth in a rented lodge with a single wide doorway and a polished timber floor the owner was protective of. We measured the route, protected the floor and doorway, and built a roulette-style table and a compact card table in the main living space in just under an hour.

Outcome. No marks on the floor, no cables across a walkway, and a host who stayed with the beginners for the first half hour. The guest of honour spent most of the evening at the card table.

Event agency production with branded entertainment tables and lighting

Event agency partner

Three events in five weeks, inside someone else production

An agency holding the client relationship and the AV contract needed the table scope delivered into their design, with their client branding on every piece. We worked to their floor plans, matched felt and chips to the client palette and briefed our hosts from their run sheets.

Outcome. Branded chips, felt and card backs proofed once and produced for all three events. The agency now briefs us directly off their floor plans without a separate planning round.

Daytime team building rotation at small entertainment tables in a function room

HR team building programme

A 70-person offsite that opened with a table rotation

The brief was to mix four departments that barely spoke, without anything that would make people stand up and perform. We ran five small tables in a darkened function room, teams drawn to cut across departments, and a facilitator moving the room on a clock.

Outcome. Standings called between rounds, a ten-minute debrief at the close, and a written description of the format for the HR record. The session now opens their annual offsite.

In their words

Feedback from hosts, venues and partners

Collected after events and published with permission, anonymised at the client's request.

The tables did what two previous years of venue hire and a playlist never managed. People mixed, and they stayed mixed.

Set up in our living room without a mark on the floor, and our host was the most popular person at the party.

We brief them once and they turn up briefed. For an agency, that is the entire value.

They told us three tables would be better than five for our numbers. They were right, and it cost them the upsell.

Our compliance team needed the no-gambling position in writing. It came back the same day and cleared sign-off without a second round.

Load-in through a single side door, up a ramp, in the rain, without a complaint. The crew made it look routine.

What these had in common

The pattern behind the four

  • A constraint set the plan No rigging, a protected floor, a single doorway, a bright house light. The plan started there, not from a table catalogue.
  • Fewer tables than expected In three of the four we proposed fewer tables than the client first asked for, and the floor worked better for it.
  • Hosts carried the evening One host per table, briefed in advance, is the single biggest factor in whether guests use the tables at all.
  • The compliance position was explicit Symbolic chips, nothing played for money, stated to guests at the table and in writing to whoever needed it.
